Eric’s Journey
|
As his addiction progressed, Eric’s world grew smaller. He isolated, broke promises to himself and others, and lived with constant guilt, shame, and regret. While he sometimes appeared functional from the outside, internally he felt restless, irritable, and trapped. Eventually, alcohol cost him his marriage, career, relationships, and home. Living out of his car off Market Street, Eric caught a glimpse of himself in the rearview mirror at 3 a.m. and barely recognized the man staring back. In that moment, he knew something had to change. On July 1, 2024, he walked into The Healing Place detox—not because he felt strong, but because he had run out of options. At The Healing Place and in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, Eric heard stories that mirrored his own. That connection gave him hope. He found a sponsor and began working the Twelve Steps. Through the recovery process—especially inventory, making amends, and learning to rely on a Higher Power—he began to experience relief that didn’t come from alcohol. Eric spent eight months completing the long-term program at The Healing Place and another eight months serving as a Peer Mentor, helping others begin their recovery journey. Today, Eric lives in an Oxford House with other men in recovery. While life is not perfect, it is honest and stable. He no longer wakes up with dread or lives behind lies. Sobriety has given him clarity, self-respect, and the ability to show up for others. He continues to attend meetings, sponsor others, and stay connected to the recovery community. Eric says he is the happiest he has been in over twenty years—even with little in a material sense. Most importantly, he now has something he once thought was impossible: hope. |
